Cleveland’s Black Owned Business Spotlight of 2021
From serving as a stop on the Underground Railroad to becoming a main destination for those leaving the South in search of new beginnings during the Great Migration during the 20th century, Cleveland’s background is rich with Black History. Innovation, ingenuity and an entrepreneurial spirit were integral to the contributions of the area’s early Black pioneers. That spirit led to some of the area’s biggest triumphs include installing the first operational traffic light in the nation (courtesy of Garrett A. Morgan), embracing the first Black mayor of a major city, along with many others. In continuing the celebration of our region’s still thriving Black heritage, this February during Black History Month, it’s important for us to take some time to acknowledge some of the Black-owned businesses in our backyard.
These are businesses that have a positive effect in the lives of their customers, and on the area in general. Local businesses are a crucial part of the fabric of our community, and we take immense pride in supporting them however we can. By placing the spotlight on Black owned businesses, we hope it becomes easier for fellow Northeast Ohio residents to support our neighbors in marginalized communities not only during Black History Month, but all year round. Our 2021 Black Business spotlight includes:
Hair and Stuff 216
After experiencing less than stellar service at other hair care retailers, co-owners Remona and Raymell decided to take matters into their own hands. By opening Hair & Stuff 216, they were able to fill a need in their community with not only their products but also by providing education on how their customers can fulfill their hair-care needs. Since opening in 2017, their impact is as strong online as it is in their physical location in Parma. After spending just a few moments on their website, their commitment to creating shopping experience that leaves nothing to be desired becomes evident.
Upon landing on the homepage, visitors are greeted with vivid photos and descriptions of various collections of products for hair products that are traditionally hard to find without tireless searching. To say that Remona and Raymell delivered on fulfilling a well-known need in their community would be an understatement. Shoppers interested in learning more about what Hair and Stuff 216 has to offer can visit their website.
Hydration Bar
As more and more people focus their attention on health and wellness, the experts at the Hydration Bar in Bainbridge offer multiple options for guests to boost their immunity, metabolism and increase energy levels. Using IV vitamin infusions, they offer treatments that specifically help those who suffer from PMS symptoms, headaches, dehydration and even hangover symptoms. Owned and operated by nursing professionals each with more than 10 years of experience, Arika and Katrina are committed to providing high quality care catered to the health needs of their guests. As part of their commitment to providing the highest level of service possible is their adherence to all covid-related protocols including temperature checks, touchless payment, and sanitization in between guests.
Upon spending some time on the website it’s clear that the business owners empathize with visitors when it comes to understanding the toll life’s tasks can take over time. For anyone feeling run-down, stressed and in need of an energy boost, its likely that the Hydration Bar has a vitamin therapy for you. Visit their website to book an appointment today.
Compvana
Providing shoppers with affordable pricing and flexible payment plans is Compvana’s specialty. As someone who’s passionate about computers and technology, Compvana’s owner Shawn is always happy to share his knowledge and expertise with his customers. Since opening in 2020, shoppers have been able to find clear and accurate descriptions of various gaming computers & monitors, home desktops, tablets, along with other top-of-the-line electronics. Along with his passion for technology, the ability to help his customers bring their own plans to fruition also motivates Shawn.
Unlike a big box retailer where the focus may be primarily on earning a sale, what Compvana prides itself on is the personal touch that they put forward in making sure their shoppers leave with exactly the workstations they need to accomplish their goals. Whether it’s e-gaming or writing code, customers can be sure they’ll find what they need, along with payment options that fit their budget.
Cloud Florist
Serving the Cleveland area for over a century, Cloud Florist has been able to adapt constantly which has allowed them to remain a staple within the community. That’s something Cloud Florist prides itself on, as their floral arrangements have been displayed in area schools, funeral homes, churches and more over the years. Their dependability is displayed not only by their reviews left by satisfied customers, but also by the fact that they provide same-day delivery to much of the region. Further cementing their reputation as a trusted florist, includes the fact that they provide customers with the option of subscribing to their newsletter which provides details on proper flower care, gift ideas and more.
Located on Cedar Rd. In Cleveland’s Fairfax neighborhood near the Cleveland Clinic, they’re no strangers to receiving orders at the last minute. No matter the occasion, Cloud Florist customers can expect the same high level of detail on every order. Find out why they’ve been able to serve the community for over 100 years by visiting them online for your next floral arrangement.
Magna Wine Boutique
Proudly boasting the mantra of “Taste-Shop-Learn”, the owners of Magna Wine Boutique are eager to express their passion for pinot with the masses. Britney and Dre who are co-owners of the locations in Bedford and Cuyahoga Falls opened just last year and hit the ground running, offering a subscription service, along with their own brand of wine. Since the business opened its doors right at the onset of the pandemic, they’ve had to incorporate a considerable amount of flexibility in their operation since day one. That flexibility allows wine lovers near and far to become members of the wine club which consists of receiving two bottles of wine curated by the Magna team itself, for one monthly cost.
Whether wine club members choose to receive their order in the mail or in-person, shoppers can be sure they’ll also pick up on the knowledge and passion the team at Magna has for wine as well. Additionally, local shoppers can take advantage of the opportunity to attend events and tastings at either of the Magna Boutique locations. If you can’t resist the urge to give their wine a try, feel free to book a reservation for a tasting today.
The contributions each of these businesses make serve as members of our community are felt daily. While it may be a habit to shop with some of the bigger retail brands we’re familiar with, it’s important to remember to support businesses in our own backyard, including those that are Black-owned. One of the best ways to contribute to the well-being and success of marginalized communities is to shop with them whenever possible. As a Cleveland-based business we’re proud to support our community however we can. For more information about ResellerRatings, check us out online and follow us on Twitter and Facebook today.
